By Angela, Your Best Teotihuacan Tour Guide
Hola! I'm Angela 👋
I've been giving Teotihuacan tours for over half a decade...
And here's a question I see get asked ALL the time:
"Angela, is a Teotihuacan tour actually worth it? Or should I just go on my own?"
So if you're trying to decide whether to book a tour or do something else entirely...
You're in the right place!
Because I'm going to give you the completely honest answer - including when Teotihuacan tours are amazing, when they're not worth it, and what other Mexico City experiences might be better for you.
The Short Answer: It Depends What You're Into
Let me give you who I think it's worth it for...
Teotihuacan tours are TOTALLY worth it if:
- You enjoy interacting with locals and learning from them
- You're going to Teotihuacan and want to understand what you're looking at (otherwise you'll just see big piles of rocks)
- You think ancient civilizations are cool
- You like learning about other cultures
- You're curious about recent archaeological discoveries (things that aren't published online or in ChatGPT yet)
Teotihuacan tours might NOT be worth it if:
- You just want to take quick photos and leave
- You don't like being around other people
- You're not interested in learning history or new things
Why Teotihuacan Tours Can Be Incredible
When I take people to Teotihuacan... they get there thinking they're just going to see some old pyramids.
But then I start telling them about the liquid mercury pools found underground, the fact that we literally don't know who built these massive structures, and how certain astronomical alignments still confuse a lot of scientists today.
Then I take them into parts of Teotihuacan that ChatGPT doesn't cover and you can't find information about online...
And suddenly, they're not just looking at rocks anymore. They're standing in the middle of one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries.
What makes it worth it:
- Learning about the 200,000 people who lived here and then mysteriously vanished
- Understanding the advanced engineering that we still can't fully explain
- Hearing about recent discoveries that keep changing what we know
- Seeing hidden details you'd walk right past on your own
- Getting the full story behind the pyramids
The Downsides of Teotihuacan Tours
Let me be honest about the not-so-great parts...
For some people, it can be a lot of walking. It's about 3 hours of walking around in the sun with minimal shade. For some people with heart conditions, this can be a bit much.
It can get hot. Especially March through October, the sun is no joke. Even with early morning tours, you'll be warm. So bring a hat, sunscreen, and a lot of water.
It's with other people (unless you get a private tour). Some people don't like meeting or being around other travelers. But for that we have private tour options.
It costs more money. You can enter the site without a tour for ~$210MXN pesos. BUT the experience truly isn't the same — you'll just be walking around looking at rocks. ChatGPT can give you some information, but you'll miss a ton.
What People Love Most About Teotihuacan Tours
Based on feedback from hundreds of tour groups, here's what people get most excited about:
The 'extra' info. On our tours we also give information about Mexico City and the neighborhoods on the way there.
Interacting with a local. Our tour guides are all local certified guides. So we share cool information about Mexican culture and you get to spend time with a local.
The ancient stories. Everyone loves hearing mysteries and stories about how we don't actually know who built these pyramids or why they suddenly abandoned them.
The recent discoveries. You'll hear details about the underground tunnels and mercury pools, and other things you can't find much about online.
The mysteries. You'll hear about the astronomical alignments and the advanced engineering techniques.
When Teotihuacan Tours Aren't Worth It
I've had some tour groups where I could tell people weren't really enjoying themselves...
If you actively dislike history, of course you won't enjoy it. Even though I tell stories and make it interesting, if you don't like that it will be a long day.
If you want a party atmosphere, Teotihuacan is definitely not that. For that you'd want to go to Xochimilco.
If you have mobility issues, the walking can be challenging. There's a lot of uneven ground and stairs.
If you're short on time, Teotihuacan is a full half-day commitment. If you have to be at the airport by 1pm, it's not worth it.
Better Mexico City Tour Options If Teotihuacan Isn't Your Thing
If you're reading this and thinking "ancient pyramids sound boring," don't worry! Mexico City has tons of other amazing experiences:
Xochimilco and Coyoacan Tour
This is like the complete opposite of Teotihuacan! You'll float down ancient canals on colorful boats called trajineras, listen to mariachi bands, eat amazing food, and drink beer or micheladas.
Lucha Libre Night Experience
Mexican wrestling is super fun too. It's like theater meets sports meets comedy. The crowd goes crazy, the costumes are incredible, and it's a lot of fun. Plus you can drink beer and eat snacks while watching the masked wrestlers flip around the ring. It's a night activity, so you can do other things during the day.
Food Tours
Mexico City has some of the best food in the world. If you're more interested in tacos, street food, and local markets than ancient history, a food tour might be perfect. You'll try things you'd never find on your own and learn about Mexican culinary culture.
How to Know If Teotihuacan Is Right for You
Ask yourself these questions:
Do you enjoy museums or historical sites? If yes, you'll probably love Teotihuacan.
Are you fascinated by ancient civilizations? The mysteries of Teotihuacan will blow your mind.
Do you like learning new things on vacation? Teotihuacan is perfect then!
Are you okay with walking? It's a pretty active experience.
Do you want to see something truly unique? There's nothing else quite like Teotihuacan.
If you answered yes to most of these, a Teotihuacan tour is probably perfect for you!
What Makes My Tours Different
If you do decide Teotihuacan sounds interesting, here's why people love my tours specifically:
I'm obsessed with the mysteries. I don't just recite facts — I share all the fascinating unknown and recent discoveries that make Teotihuacan so amazing.
We start early. Pickups start between 6:30AM and 7AM so we beat the crowds and the heat.
I make it fun. Yes, it's educational, but I keep things engaging with stories and interactive discussions.
Small groups. You're not stuck in a crowd of 30 people trying to hear over tour bus noise.
Flexible experience. Want to spend more time learning about the astronomy? Interested in the underground discoveries? I adapt based on what excites you most on a private tour.
The Bottom Line
Teotihuacan tours are absolutely worth it if you're interested in ancient history, mysteries, and archaeological discoveries.
They're not worth it if you prefer party atmospheres, aren't into educational experiences, or want something more social and festive. For that, there's other tours like partying on colorful boats at Xochimilco, or watching masked wrestlers at Lucha Libre.
Have questions about whether Teotihuacan (or any other Mexico City experience) is right for you? Let me know in the comments!

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Teotihuacan tour worth it?
Yes, for most travelers a Teotihuacan tour is absolutely worth it. A certified local guide unlocks the full history — the liquid mercury pools, the unsolved mysteries, the recent archaeological discoveries — that you simply can't get from walking around on your own. If you enjoy history, ancient civilizations, or learning something genuinely surprising, it's one of the best day trips from Mexico City.
Is it better to visit Teotihuacan with or without a guide?
With a guide, for most people. Without one, Teotihuacan is impressive to look at but hard to understand — you're essentially walking around large stone structures with no context. A guide brings the site to life with stories, mysteries, and details you won't find on any sign or in ChatGPT. The exception is if you've already studied Mesoamerican archaeology extensively and just want to explore at your own pace.
How much does a Teotihuacan tour cost?
Find Me Mexico group tours start at MX$1,299 per person, which includes round-trip transportation from your hotel or Airbnb, all entrance tickets, and a full guided tour. Private tours start at MX$2,800. Visiting on your own costs around MX$210 for entrance only, but transportation, tickets, and the experience of understanding what you're seeing are all extra.
How long does a Teotihuacan tour take?
A full Teotihuacan tour is roughly 8 hours from pickup to drop-off. Pickup is between 6:30AM and 7AM from your hotel or Airbnb, and you're back in Mexico City by early afternoon. The time at the pyramids is about 3 hours of guided walking.
Is Teotihuacan worth it for people who don't like history?
Probably not — and that's okay. If you're not interested in learning about ancient civilizations or archaeology, Teotihuacan will feel like a long hot walk. Mexico City has great alternatives: Xochimilco for a fun canal boat experience with mariachis, Lucha Libre for Mexican wrestling at night, or a food tour if you'd rather explore tacos and street food than pyramids.
