By Angela, Your Tour Guide Who's Been There in Every Season
Hola! I'm Angela 👋
I've been giving Teotihuacan tours for over half a decade now…
And I've literally been to the pyramids in scorching heat, pouring rain, perfect sunny days, and everything in between.
So if you're wondering "what's the weather like at Teotihuacan?" or "when's the best time to visit Teotihuacan?"
…you're in the right place!
Because I'm going to break down:
- Exactly what to expect each month
- What to pack
- And why timing your visit right can make or break your pyramid experience!
Why Teotihuacan Weather Matters More Than You Think
Teotihuacan is completely exposed.
So when it's hot, it's REALLY hot. When it rains, you're getting soaked. And when it's windy… you feel it!
I've seen people pass out from the heat and I've watched tourists get caught in sudden downpours without umbrellas because they weren't prepared for the weather.
That's why on my Teotihuacan tours I always check the weather and give people a heads up about what to expect and what to bring!
But let me break it down month by month so you can plan the perfect visit…
Teotihuacan Weather by Month: The Complete Guide
January - February: Cool and Dry (Perfect!)
Temperature: 60-75°F (15-24°C)
Rain: Almost none
Crowds: Moderate
This is one of my favorite times to visit Teotihuacan!
The weather is absolutely perfect - warm enough to be comfortable, but not so hot that you're dying in the sun.
What to pack:
- Light layers (it can be cool in the morning)
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sunscreen (the sun is still strong!)
- A light jacket for early morning tours
March - May: Warm and Dry (Excellent!)
Temperature: 70-85°F (21-29°C)
Rain: Very little
Crowds: Getting busier
This is another great time to visit the pyramids!
March and April are especially great because it's warm but not unbearably hot yet.
By May, it starts getting pretty toasty, especially in the afternoon. That's why I start my tours early - to beat the heat!
What to pack:
- Lightweight, breathable clothing
- A wide-brimmed hat
- Lots of sunscreen
- At least 2 water bottles per person
- Sunglasses
Insider tip: If you're visiting in May, definitely book a morning tour. The afternoon sun can be brutal!
June - September: Rainy Season (Tricky but Doable!)
Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C)
Rain: Frequent afternoon/evening showers
Crowds: Lower (because of the rain)
Okay, so this is Mexico's rainy season…
But here's what most people don't know: it usually doesn't rain until the evening!
Most days are actually beautiful and sunny until around 4-6 PM. Then the afternoon thunderstorms roll in.
What to pack:
- Umbrella or rain poncho
- Quick-dry clothing
- Waterproof bag for your phone/camera
- Non-slip shoes (stones get slippery when wet)
- Still bring sun protection for the sunny parts!
The upside: Fewer crowds and everything is super green and beautiful after the rains in Mexico City!
The downside: If you get caught in a downpour, you're going to get soaked.
October - December: Cool and Pleasant (Great Choice!)
Temperature: 65-78°F (18-26°C)
Rain: Minimal
Crowds: Picking up again
This is peak season, but it's a great time to visit Teotihuacan because of Day of the Dead and because rainy season is over!
December can get a bit busy with holiday travelers, but the weather is still fantastic.
What to pack:
- Layers (mornings can be cool)
- Comfortable shoes
- Sun protection
- Light sweater for early morning or late afternoon
The BEST Times to Visit Teotihuacan
After thousands of tours, here are my top recommendations:
🥇 Best Overall: January - February Perfect weather, manageable crowds, comfortable temperatures all day.
🥈 Second Best: March - April
Great weather before it gets too hot, still relatively manageable crowds.
🥉 Third Best: October - December
Post-rainy season, beautiful weather, peak season so there's bigger crowds
What Time of Day Should You Visit?
This is SUPER important and depends on the season:
Best Times:
- 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Perfect for any season
- 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Good in winter months only
Avoid:
- 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Too hot and crowded (especially March-October)
That's why my tours start at 7:00 AM - we beat the heat, the crowds, and get the best lighting for photos!
What to Pack For Teotihuacan Depending on The Season
Dry Season (October - May):
✅ Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
✅ Wide-brimmed hat
✅ Sunglasses
✅ 2+ water bottles per person
✅ Comfortable walking shoes
✅ Light layers
✅ Camera/phone with extra battery
Rainy Season (June - September):
✅ Everything from dry season, PLUS:
✅ Umbrella or rain poncho
✅ Waterproof bag
✅ Non-slip shoes/boots you don't care about getting dirty
✅ Towel (just in case!)
How Weather Affects Your Teotihuacan Experience
Perfect Weather Days:
- Great photo opportunities
- Comfortable walking
- Can visit all the pyramids
Hot Days (85°F+):
- Need frequent water breaks
- Get tired easily
- Early morning is essential
Rainy Days:
- A bit muddy
- Limited visibility for photos
- Can't climb the pyramids on these days (it's too dangerous)
Weather Myths vs. Reality
Myth: "It's always hot at Teotihuacan"
Reality: Winter mornings can actually be cold!
Myth: "You can't visit during rainy season"
Reality: Most rain happens in the evening, mornings are usually fine.
Myth: "The weather is the same as Mexico City"
Reality: Teotihuacan is often 5-10 degrees hotter, more exposed to wind, and the sun is really a lot more strong (it burns you more and sometimes people get little sun blisters from it)
My Final Weather Tips
After all these years giving tours, here's my best advice:
- Check the weather 2-3 days before your visit - Mexican weather can change quickly!
- Always bring more water than you think you need - I've never had someone complain about bringing too much water.
- Dress in layers - Mornings can be cool, afternoons hot.
- Don't let a little rain scare you - Some of my most memorable tours have been on cloudy, dramatic days!
- Always book a morning tour if possible!
