By Angela, Your Tour Guide Who’s Been There Way Too Many Times
Hola! I’m Angela 👋
A local and certified tour guide, history enthusiast, and someone who’s been to Teotihuacan more times than I can count.
In this post I'll answer some common questions I get before a tour, like:
- “Is it safe to visit Teotihuacan? Is Teotihuacan safe?”
- “Is it safe to take a bus to Teotihuacan?”
- “Should I worry about getting pickpocketed at Teotihuacan?”
So, if you're wondering any of that...
Then you're in the right place!

Because I'm going to share ALL the tips you need to stay 100% completely safe at Teotihuacan.!
I'll share the safest ways to get to the pyramids (bus, Uber, or tour).
What to bring so you're comfortable and prepared.
And simple tips to stay safe and happy while you explore Teotihuacan.
Let’s dive in! 👇
Starting with...
Should You Worry About Safety in Teotihuacan?
Short answer: Teotihuacan is very safe!
There's a lot of safety measures in place like limited access times, some police, and there's security guards outside of every gate (but they mostly just make sure you have a ticket to enter!)
So if you want to plan a Teotihuacan visit, you don't have to worry.
It’s completely safe.
However, it IS important to visit Teotihuacan during the day and stay around the pyramid site.
Because if you go near the different neighborhoods outside of Teotihuacan during the night, there's no guarantee that you'll be 100% safe, obviously.
So, just avoid visiting sketchy areas during the night, and you'll be fine!
But when it comes to an actual visit that takes place during the day, Teotihuacan is definitely a safe place to check out.
But it still helps if you check out some of our safety tips below, just to ensure there are no issues or concerns!
Some Safety Tips for Teotihuacan:
Ask before you feed the dogs
There's a lot of stray dogs at Teotihuacan because they like to sleep in the caves around the pyramids.
Most of them are friendly!
(some of them are shy and will just run away haha)
BUT...
Please ask before you feed the dogs, because sometimes they're not allowed to eat certain foods (like if it's after a surgery or something)

There's actually a little group of dogs that follow me sometimes on my tours!
(because I buy dog food and feed the dogs every time I visit them. I donate ~10% of all my income to the dogs at Teotihuacan. We give them food, water, and sometimes medicine and operations)
Try to get to Teotihuacan early
A good idea when you visit Teotihuacan is to get there as early as you can during the day.
Why?
Because the sun is very intense at the pyramids, and there's no shade.
That's why on my Teotihuacan private tour we leave earlier, and pick you up at 7AM!
(to skip the sun and skip the lines. Unlike some of the big tours who don't get there till mid-day)
Also, it gets really hot at the pyramids... way hotter than in Mexico City.
So if you’re at the pyramids during the middle of the day, it might start to feel uncomfortable and you won't enjoy it as much.
Plus, the crowds of big tour busses and all the people usually arrive later on during the day.
So then it becomes crowded and busy and you don't get as good of pictures.
Basically, there's a lot of reasons to get to Teotihuacan early.
Bring the right stuff with you
Make sure to wear sunblock and bring a hat.
Because the sun is unforgiving.
I've seen people pass out because they get too hot!
Plus keep that in mind when it comes to your shoes. I'd recommend wearing comfortable shoes (not sandals). Because you'll most likely be walking a lot and it'll be a lot more comfortable wearing sandals.
Don’t try to climb the pyramids
For a while, people were allowed to climb the Teotihuacan pyramids.
But unfortunately after Covid, it's not allowed anymore.
I'm not sure if they'll ever re-open them to climb, but it's okay because the pyramids are beautiful and even seeing them from the ground level is a wonderful experience!
Take the seasons into account
In Mexico we have a few different seasons.
You'll want to take that into account when visiting the Teotihuacan pyramids.
For example if you visit during the rainy season (June to September), you'll want to bring an umbrella or a poncho with you.
But usually the rain doesn't happen until the evening, so you'll most likely be okay if you visit Teotihuacan during the morning-time.
Now... let's talk about getting to Teotihuacan safely.
Is It Safe to Take the Bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacan?
The short answer... yes!
The public bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacan is completely safe to go to the pyramids.
You’ll be traveling with lots of other visitors, it’s affordable (around $80 pesos / ~$4 USD), and it drops you off right near the main entrance at Puerta 2.
I wrote another post on all the options for how to get to Teotihuacan from Mexico City. Check it out if you want!
Also another safe option is Uber. However it's pretty expensive and you may as well take a private tour for that price because there's no guarantee you can get an Uber back... and on a private tour we drive you wherever you want (restaurants, etc).
BUT...
The real issue with taking a bus or Uber to the pyramids...
Is when you arrive to the pyramids...
...you're not really going to understand what you're looking at, aside from a big pile of stones!
There's tons of amazing ancient secrets, interesting stories about the pyramids, and a bunch of unique scientific discoveries that make the pyramids SO much more magical when you know them.
Which is why I'd recommend taking one of my tours!
Because I gave you ALL that information and MORE!
(okay okay... I'm a little biased)
But even if it's not with me, I'd recommend taking a tour to Tetoihuacan.
Because it's completely worth it!
Otherwise, you're going to be missing out on the entire history of the pyramids.
But all in all, if you're wondering "is Teotihuacan safe?" the answer is yes.
A Teotihuacan visit is safe and you don’t have to worry about any issues.
Of course, you don’t want to wander around there during the night or evening. But other than that, you'll be fine. Especially if you're taking one of our Teotihuacan guided tours, because we drop you off back at your hotel or Airbnb.
Anyways, aside from all this - just remember, take sunscreen, a hat, water and any other items that will help you stay healthy and safe, to avoid any problems!

Angela
