By Angela, a Teotihuacan Tour Guide & Owner of Find Me Mexico
Some Teotihuacan guides are super fun and bring the pyramids to life with incredible stories, cool information and an engaging and interesting presentation...
...but others basically just walk around, point at stuff, give very basic or even false information and may even bring you to tourist trap shops.
So if you're trying to figure out how to find a great Teotihuacan guide...
Then keep reading!
How to Find a Teotihuacan Tour Guide - Your Options
There's a few different ways to find a Teotihuacan pyramids tour guide...
Option 1: Show Up and Find a Guide at the Pyramids
Option 2: Book Through Your Hotel
Option 3: Book Through Online Platforms (Airbnb, Viator, etc)
Option 4: Book Directly with Local Guides (Like Me!!)
Let me break down each!
Option 1: Show Up and Find a Teotihuacan Tour Guide at the Pyramids
Many people arrive at Teotihuacan and look for guides hanging around the entrance.
The Good: You can meet the guide first and get a feel for their personality before committing. Plus, you're supporting local guides directly without any platform taking a cut.
The Bad: It's a gamble. Some of these guides are good! But others share false information... and you really have no way to check reviews or credentials beforehand.
The Reality: If you're trying to save money and do a DIY trip to Teotihuacan, this is your best option. A "decent" guide is better than no guide, because if not - you're going to arrive at Teotihuacan and feel like you're looking at a bunch of rocks without knowing the history.
Option 2: Book a Teotihuacan Tour Guide Through Hotel Concierges
Most hotels in Mexico City can arrange Teotihuacan tours for you.
The Good: It's super convenient, and hotels usually work with guides they trust. Plus, if something goes wrong, you have someone to complain to!
The Bad: Hotels don't always know which guides are good - they just know which ones give them the biggest kickbacks.
The Reality: Hotel tours are a solid option, but they tend to be generic. They'll get you there and back safely, but don't expect to have your mind blown by a top-rated experience where you learn all the cool stories and secrets that make Teotihuacan special.
Option 3: Viator, Airbnb and Similar Platforms
Viator and Airbnb are two of the bigger tour booking platforms, and they have tons of Teotihuacan options.
The Good: You can read reviews from other travelers, compare different guides and prices, and book everything online. There's also some protection if the tour doesn't happen or is terrible.
The Bad: Tour platforms take a percentage from guides (sometimes 20-30%!). But for you as a tourist, it won't affect you.
The Reality: There ARE excellent guides on Viator, but you have to dig through a lot of options to find them.
My Take: It's not terrible, but you're paying extra for the convenience of the platform, and you might not get the best guide available.
BUT...
I have to be honest about GetYourGuide because it affects me and other local guides directly...
The Good: They have a user-friendly website and lots of options.
The Bad: GetYourGuide has basically become a monopoly that's pushing out local, independent guides. They kicked off many experienced local guides (including several of my friends) and only allow big tour companies that offer cheaper, low-quality experiences.
The Reality: The majority of the Teotihuacan tours on GetYourGuide are basically the same big charter company who gives the basic generic tour. You'll get transported to Teotihuacan, but don't expect an authentic experience you'd get from other guides. HOWEVER, the price is low (because you'll be sharing the tour with ~40 people. Unless you book a private tour, which can be a good option)
My Take: I'd highly recommend avoiding GetYourGuide if you want a quality experience and also if you care about supporting local Mexican guides. Their business practices have hurt the local guiding community, and the quality has gone way downhill.
Option 4: Book Directly with Local Teotihuacan Tour Guides (Like Me!)
I'm biased because this is obviously what I'm going to recommend ๐ but let me explain why...
The Good: You get a higher quality experience for a fair price. For example, myself and my team of guides are ALL trained on factual history, we're certified guides, and we present the stories and secrets of Teotihuacan in a fun, engaging way.
(I've heard other tour guides giving false information about Teotihuacan to sound cool or maybe they just haven't studied much, but I'm adamantly against that)
The Bad: Since you're already on my website this doesn't apply to you - but normally to find a local guide it requires a bit more research.
The Reality: When you book directly with me, you're getting someone who's obsessed with Teotihuacan, knows all the latest archaeological discoveries, and genuinely loves sharing the mysteries and stories of the pyramids. Plus, I can customize the experience based on what you're most interested in.
My Take: This is obviously biased, but I think booking directly with passionate local guides gives you the best experience and value.
Teotihuacan Tour Scams to Watch Out For
No matter how you find your guide, here are some warning signs to avoid:
Price seems too good to be true. If someone's offering a full-day Teotihuacan tour for like $20, there's probably a catch. Either they're not including transportation, entrance fees, or it's not even real.
They can't answer basic questions about Teotihuacan. A good guide should be able to tell you about recent archaeological discoveries, the mysteries of who built it, and interesting historical details. If they just want to take photos of you and don't seem to know much... run!
They're pushy about additional purchases. A good guide will suggest places to buy things, but won't pressure you.
No clear communication beforehand. If you can't get clear answers about pickup times, what's included, or the itinerary, that's a red flag.
What Makes a Great Teotihuacan Guide
After half a decade giving Teotihuacan tours, here's what I think separates amazing guides from average ones:
Passion: The best guides are genuinely fascinated by Teotihuacan and love sharing that excitement with visitors. You can tell the difference between someone who's just doing a job and someone who's obsessed with ancient mysteries!
Up-to-date knowledge: Archaeology is constantly evolving. Great guides stay current with new discoveries and research. For example, the liquid mercury discovery in 2015 completely changed how we understand Teotihuacan, but some guides are still sharing outdated information.
Storytelling ability: Anyone can point at a pyramid and tell you how many stairs there are. Great guides can connect that information to stories, theories, and details about ancient cultures that make you feel connected and educated about the people who lived there over 2,000 years ago.
Flexibility and personalization: The best guides adapt to their group's interests, energy level, and pace. They're not just following a script.
Local connections: Experienced local guides know the best spots for photos, the coolest hidden details, and can recommend great restaurants or other activities.
What's The Best Teotihuacan Tour Guide Option?
I think booking directly with local guides is the way to go ๐
Here's why:
When you book through platforms, a chunk of your money goes to the platform instead of the guide. This creates pressure for guides to either raise prices or cut corners to maintain their profit margins.
When you book directly, that money goes straight to the guide, which means they can focus on giving you an amazing experience instead of worrying about platform fees and commissions.
On my tours, I love when people reach out ahead of time to tell me what they're most excited about. It helps me tailor the experience to make sure you get exactly what you're hoping for.
What You Should Expect from a Great Guide
When you find the right guide, here's what your Teotihuacan experience should include:
Transportation from your hotel or a central meeting point. You shouldn't have to figure out how to get there on your own.
All entrance fees included. No surprise costs when you arrive.
At least 3-4 hours at the site. Anything less is rushed.
Stories and mysteries, not just facts. You want to understand the fascinating unknowns about Teotihuacan, not just hear dates and measurements.
Photo opportunities at the best spots. Your guide should know all the angles that make for great pictures.
Restaurant recommendations or included lunch. Local guides know the best places to eat.
Answers to your questions. Even if the answer is "we don't know" - that's part of what makes Teotihuacan so fascinating!
No tourist traps.
