Hola amigos!
I'm Angela Vilchiz - a certified local guide for Teotihuacan, a history nerd, and someone who's led literally 1,000s of people through Teotihuacan tours.
And lately I noticed people getting confused and unsure about...
"Should I book a private tour or join a group tour to Teotihuacan?"
So if you're trying to figure out which option is best for YOU...
...you're in exactly the right place!
Because in this post, I'll break down:
- The main differences between private and group tours
- The pros and cons of each option
- Who each type of tour is perfect for
- And some easy tips to help you make the right choice!
So let's get to it...

Comparing a Teotihuacan Private Tour vs. Teotihuacan Group Tour
Before I get into all the details, here's the super-quick breakdown:
- It's just you (and whoever you bring)
- You have a flexible schedule and custom experience (go to whatever restaurant you want, spend more time in a certain place, etc)
- You get more personal attention from your guide (me!)
- Costs a little more
- You can meet other travelers from around the world (sometimes, depending on how many other people book a tour that day)
- The itinerary is FIXED and you can't make changes or eat where you want
- You can still ask questions but depending on the group size, the attention is shared with other guests
- More affordable per person
Now this is just a highlight but there's actually a little bit more to consider...
Why Choose a Private Teotihuacan Tour?
Customized Itinerary + Flexible Timing
With a private tour, you get to choose all the details like:
- Where to eat
- How long you want to spend at certain places
- If you want to take a break
- The pace of the tour - fast or slow
- The pickup hours
- etc...
On a private tour, it's all based on what YOU want or need.
It's Ideal For Family Groups or Special Occasions
Private tours are ideal for certain group dynamics like:
- Families with kids (we can go at their pace and keep them engaged)
- Older people with mobility concerns (we can take more breaks and use the easiest paths)
- Photography enthusiasts (I know all the best angles and quieter spots)
I had a group last year with three generations - grandparents, parents, and their adult kids.
The family was a bit concerned about grandma being able to keep up...

But SHE was the one who wanted to keep going while everyone else was tired!
That's one of the biggest benefits of a private tour to the Teotihuacan pyramids.
A Private Teotihuacan Tour is a Premium Experience
Private tours DO cost more.
But when you break it down per person, especially for families or groups of 3-4 people, the difference isn't actually that big.
And what you get in return is a completely customized experience with:
- Pickup and dropoff from your hotel/Airbnb
- Flexible tour times (we can make the tour shorter if you're in a rush... or even start later if you want to sleep in that day)
- Personalized food recommendations based on YOUR preferences
- All your questions answered without competing with other guests
All in all, private tours have their place and time.

Now on the flip side is Group Tours to Teotihuacan...
Why Choose a Group Teotihuacan Tour?
You Can Meet Other Travelers & Make New Friends
I LOVE the energy of group tours!
There's something special about exploring ancient pyramids with people from all over the world. I've seen friendships form that lasted long after the tour ended - people exchanging contacts and meeting up later in Mexico City for dinner!
On group tours, you get to:
- Meet other travelers
- Exchange travel tips for other parts of Mexico
- Get different perspectives as people ask questions you might not have thought of
Also...
Group Teotihuacan Tours Cost LESS
For some people, budget matters when you're traveling!
And a group tour cost less than a private tour.
And you still get:
- Transportation to and from central Mexico City
- All entrance fees included
- Expert guiding with all the stories and historical context
- The same passionate, knowledgeable guide (that's me!) as private tours
So for solo travelers or couples on a budget, group tours are a good option that gives you the full Teotihuacan experience without breaking the bank.
What Are the Downsides of a Group or Private Teotihuacan Tour?
Here's some things to consider for each option:
Private Teotihuacan Tour:
- Higher cost
- Can feel less social if you're traveling alone and want to meet people
Group Teotihuacan Tour:
- Fixed schedule that can't be customized
- Shared attention from your guide (but I make sure EVERYONE gets their questions answered!)
- Varied pace (some people walk faster, others slower)
So... Which Teotihuacan Tour Should YOU Choose?
To make it simple...
Choose a PRIVATE TOUR if:
- You're traveling with family (especially with older adults)
- You have specific interests you want to explore in depth
- You want a flexible schedule (early start or specific end time)
- You need a more relaxed pace
- You want a premium experience with personalized attention
Choose a GROUP TOUR if:
- You don't mind being with other travelers
- You're okay with a set itinerary
- You want to save a little money
The 3rd Option - Go Solo to Teotihuacan!
I wrote another post talking about how to do Teotihuacan solo...
That's always an option (not one I'd recommend) but I talk about it on that blog above.
Anyways I hope that answered all your questions, and if you want more info about booking a tour with me...
